Ruy Lopez

Don't take the bait! The Fishing Pole Trap

Black leaves a knight on g4 as bait. Take it and the h-file opens straight at your king, ending in mate on h1.

Italian Game

Fried Liver Attack: mate in 9 (and how to stop it)

After 5…Nxd5? 6.Nxf7! the black king is dragged out. The fix: don't recapture on d5, play 5…Na5! instead.

Petrov Defense

Don't fall for this Petrov trap

After 3…Nxe4? 4.Qe2! the knight is pinned and Nc6+ wins the queen. The fix: play 3…d6 first.

Scholar's Mate

Stop the Scholar's Mate (and punish it)

Block with g6, defend f7 with Nf6, then hit the queen with Nd4. Early queen? Develop and make her run.

Opening mistakes

He moved his king on move 5… big mistake

No castling, a knight fork on f7 and a rook gone. In the opening, castle; don't move your king by hand.

Scholar's Mate

I fell for the oldest trick in chess

Queen and bishop against f7. Once they aim at f7, keep defending it.
